CALGARY, AB. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Tri-City Americans’ forward Brendan Shinnimin is the WHL Player of the Week.
Shinnimin collected 19 points, scoring 11 goals and eight assists to go with a +9 rating, in four games over the past week helping the Americans to a 4-0-0-0 record.
On Tuesday, February 21, Shinnimin scored three goals, including the game winner, added three assists and was named the games 1st Star as the Ams’ downed the visiting Everett Silvertips 7-2. The ‘Tips were back in Tri-City on Friday, February 24 and Shinnimin picked up where he left off, scoring another three goals, adding an assist and again being named the games 1st Star in the Americans 4-2 victory. On Saturday, February 25, Shinnimin picked up one goal and three assists in the Americans 7-3 road win over the Spokane Chiefs. On Sunday, February 26, the Americans were in Seattle to face the Thunderbirds. Shinnimin collected four goals, including the game winner, one assist and was named the games 1st Star in the Ams’ 5-1 triumph over the ‘Tbirds.
Shinnimin is currently on a 10 game goal scoring streak, find the net 21 times in that span, and currently leads all WHL scorers with 115 points (52 goals, 63 assists) in 59 games played. The Americans have won their last six games and currently sit first in the WHL Western Conference and entire League with a 44-15-1-2 record for 91 points.
A 21-year-old (born 1991) from Winnipeg, MB, Shinnimin is in his fourth full season with the Tri-City Americans. Originally an Americans list player, he has gone on to appear in 257 career WHL games collecting 125 goals, 193 assists and 318 points.
The WHL has also nominated Matt Hewitt of the Regina Pats for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Hewitt posted a 2-0-0-1 record this past week, stopping 99 of 103 shots faced for a 0.961 save-percentage and 1.30 goals-against average. Hewitt, a 19-year-old from New Westminster, BC, currently sits 8th among all WHL goaltenders with a 2.63 goals-against average.
