Flint Jr. Generals to host special food drive

Press Release

The Flint Junior Generals hockey team is reaching out to help feed struggling local families by hosting a canned food drive during their hockey game on Wednesday, February 29 at their 7:20 pm face off with the Metro Jets at the Iceland Arena located at 1160 S. Elms Road.

Fans will receive $1.00 off game day admission for each donated canned good with a limit of two cans per person. Items collected will be donated to The Salvation Army Beecher Corps pantry to provide needed food for the approximately 150 to 180 families who visit the pantry each week.

The need is great in Genesee County as one in three children are living in poverty — a 25 percent increase since 2005 — and more than half of local children are raised in low-income households that qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches, according to the 2011 Kids Count Data Book. The Junior Generals hosted a food drive in November collecting nearly 350 pounds of food and $163.00 in cash donations.

The Flint Jr Generals are members of the EMHA (Eastern Michigan Hockey Association) and have been dedicated to youth hockey in the greater Flint area for over 35 years. The EMHA has produced hockey players that have advanced on to higher levels of hockey including collegiate teams, Junior A, semi-pros, pros, and gold medal Olympians.

Please join us on Wednesday, February 29 to attend the Flint Jr Generals vs. the Metro Jets hockey game in support of our youth activities as well as to help feed local families in need.
