With eight international games already in the books, the Waterloo Black Hawks begin United States Hockey League exhibition play on Friday, September 14th at Young Arena against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, the Hawks announced Friday.
During the preseason opener, Black Hawks players will be recognized for their silver medal performance during the 2012 Junior Club World Cup, which concluded last Sunday in Omsk, Russia. Waterloo won four of six games and reached the tournament finals during the second annual event. In addition, the squad met two additional Russian junior clubs in Moscow to warm up for their World Cup run.
“Playing and traveling together for nearly a month has been a unique opportunity for this Black Hawks team,” said head coach P.K. O’Handley. “We are certainly proud to recognize what was accomplished and share that with our fans in two weeks, but with the start of the USHL preseason, we are really beginning again and focusing on what we play for all year long.”
After their initial appearance, the Hawks will then skate in four exhibition road games before the USHL schedule begins on September 28th, also on the road, against the Green Bay Gamblers. After hosting the RoughRiders September 14th, Waterloo will visit Cedar Rapids Ice Arena the following night. Three contests versus Eastern Conference opponents during the USHL Fall Classic in Sioux City September 20th through 22nd will conclude the preseason calendar.
