Holmberg Denny’s WHL Player of the Week

The Western Hockey League announced today that Spokane Chiefs’ forward Mitch Holmberg is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending September 29, 2013.   

Holmberg recorded 10 points on five goals and five assists to go with a +6 rating over three games in the last week, helping lead the Chiefs to three wins in that span.

On Tuesday, September 24th, Holmberg scored two goals and two assists for a four-point outing while earning 1st Star honors in a 6-2 victory over the Victoria Royals in Victoria, B.C.  On Wednesday, September, 25th, Holmberg enjoyed his second four-point outing in as many nights, netting a goal and three assists as the Chiefs defeated the Royals 6-1 in Victoria.  On Saturday, September 28th, Holmberg scored both goals and was named the game’s 1st Star in a 2-1 win over the visiting Tri-City Americans.

Holmberg, a product of Sherwood Park, AB, currently leads all WHL players in scoring with eight goals and 14 points through the Chiefs’ first four games of the season.  The 20-year-old, five-year WHL veteran was the Chiefs’ first-round pick, 21st overall, in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft.  Holmberg has played 246 career regular-season games for Spokane, amassing 93 goals and 192 points.

The WHL has also nominated Daniel Wapple of the Medicine Hat Tigers for the CHL Goaltender of the Week award.  Wapple, an 18-year-old from Saskatoon, SK, posted a victory in his only start on the weekend, allowing one goal on 35 shots for a 1.00 goals-against average and a .971 save percentage in the Tigers’ 3-1 win over the visiting Swift Current Broncos on Saturday, September 28th.  Wapple is in his second season in the WHL, and first season with the Medicine Hat Tigers.
