Honka Denny's WHL player of the week

Press Release

The Western Hockey League announced today that Swift Current Broncos rookie defenceman Julius Honka is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week.

Honka netted 6 points over two games, scoring one goal and five assists to go with a +4 rating while helping the Broncos to a pair of victories over the Regina Pats during the opening weekend of the 2013-14 regular season.

On Thursday, September 19th, Honka scored once and set up two more for a three-point effort to go with 2nd Star honors in his WHL regular-season debut as the Broncos skated to a 7-2 victory over the Pats in Regina, SK.

On Saturday, September 21st, Honka picked up three assists and was named the game’s 1st Star as the Broncos edged the visiting Pats 3-2 in Swift Current, SK.

Honka, a 17-year-old from Jyvaskyla, Finland, is just beginning his first season in the WHL with the Broncos.  The 5’11”, 175-lb rearguard was the Broncos’ first-round pick, 34th overall, in the 2013 CHL Import Draft.  Honka is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft.

The WHL has also nominated Marek Langhamer of the Medicine Hat Tigers for the CHL Goaltender of the Week award.  Langhamer, a 19-year-old from Moravska Trebova, CZE, posted victory in his lone start on the weekend, allowing one goal on 22 shots for a 1.00 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage in the Tigers’ 6-1 win over the Hurricanes in Lethbridge, AB.  Langhamer, a Phoenix Coyotes prospect, is in his second WHL season with the Tigers.
